    Chapter One:

    1. Junctures (p. 1): where things join together (“leaf junctures”: where the leaves meet the branch)
    2. Sycamores (p. 1): an American tree (look up on google for picture)
    3. Recumbent (p. 1): lying down
    4. Jungle-up (p. 2): hoboes gathering together and camping out
    5. Bindle (p. 3): a bedroll or other bundle
    6. Morosely (p. 4): bad-tempered
    7. Work card (p. 5): in the Depression, people needed govt. permission to find jobs b/c there were so many people out of work during that time
    8. Weed (p. 7): a town in California to the north of Salinas Valley
    9. Stake (p. 13): a largish sum of money
    10. Jack (p. 14): a largish sum of money

    Chapter Two:

    1. Scourges (p. 18): anything that causes discomfort or suffering (here, it’s bugs)
    2. Skeptically (p. 19): to do something in a doubtful or unsure way
    3. Buck (p. 22): to heave huge grain bags (75 lbs) onto a wagon or truck
    4. Barley (pp. 22-23): a cereal grass, the grain of which is often used to make malts for animal feed
    5. Mollify (p. 24): to make someone feel better, to calm or soothe
    6. Pugnacious (p. 25) eager to fight
    7. Jerkline skinner (p. 28): the driver of a team of mules, using a rein (jerkline)
    8. Tart (p. 28) woman of loose morals
    9. Archly (p. 31): playfully
    10. Apprehensive (p. 32): anxious, fearful

    Chapter Three:

    1. Derision (p. 38): making fun of or laughing at someone
    2. Receptive (p. 39): able and willing to listen to new ideas (receive them)
    3. Lynch (p. 42): to hang
    4. Euchre (p. 48): a card game
    5. San Quentin (p. 56): a state prison in California
    6. Hoosegow (p. 56): jail
    7. Reprehensible (p. 59): something that deserves criticism; really evil
    8. Bemused (p. 60): deep in thought, puzzled
    9. “On the County” (p. 60): on welfare
    10. Welter (p. 62): a welterweight (a boxer who weighs between 136 and 147 lbs – light!)
